Membership of AOUP

Membership of AOUP

When you retire directly from working for the University you automatically become an Ordinary Member of the Association, as does your spouse/partner (even if they have not been a University employee). Both of you are also eligible to join as Social Members.

If you retire directly from working for a college membership of AOUP is not automatic, but you (and your spouse/partner) are eligible for Social Membership.

For Social Membership a modest annual subscription is payable of £5 per person which enables you, plus one guest, to take part in a wide range of social activities and events organised by the Association throughout the year.

The next  sections on this page explain the benefits available to you as a member of AOUP.

Newsletter
The newsletter is produced twice a year and features articles of general interest, as well as summaries of recent winter talks. You can read online copies of the current and past issues on the Newsletter page.

Winter talks
Free talks on a wide range of topics take place monthly on Wednesday afternoons from October to March in the Department of Engineering Science. They are followed by refreshments. The current programme is listed on the Winter Talks page.

Winter visits and walks
During the winter months, AOUP organises a number of visits and historical walks around the city. These are usually free of charge. Recent events include a walk around the Folly Bridge and Grandpont areas, a ‘Green Man’ themed walk around the city centre and a tour of Jesus College. The programme is circulated in advance with the Autumn issue of the newsletter, and forthcoming events are listed on the Events for Social Members page.

Summer outings
During the summer months, from spring to autumn, AOUP runs a number of day or half-day coach trips to a variety of interesting places, such as historic towns, stately homes, castles, gardens and heritage sites. Recent venues include Winchester, Highclere Castle and Osterley Park. AOUP subsidises about 10% of the cost of these outings for members. However, the full cost is payable for a guest.

A longer excursion (5-6 days) is a highlight of the summer calendar. Destinations in recent years have included Northumberland, the Isle of Man and Glasgow.

The summer outings programme is circulated in advance with the Spring issue of the newsletter, and upcoming events are listed on the Events for Social Members page.

Carol service and Christmas lunch
AOUP’s Christmas celebration takes place in December in a college, currently Exeter. Demand for places is generally high.

Summer garden party
AOUP’s summer garden party is another popular seasonal event. It takes place during the Long Vacation in a college, currently St Hugh’s. Invitations are circulated with the Spring newsletter.

Walking groups
Two informal groups each meet once a month for sociable walks around Oxford and the surrounding countryside:

  • AOUP Ramble On organises walks of 4-6 miles on the first Thursday of the month. For further information, email aouprambleon@gmail.com.
  • Amblers Anonymous organises gentle strolls of 2-3 miles on the third Friday of the month, followed by coffee or lunch. For further information, email susangreenford@uwclub.net.
