New College has always been an influential college at Oxford. Founded by William of Wykeham, bishop of Winchester, in 1379,the college had three significant features from the start: the teaching of undergraduates, a feeder school (Winchester College) to make sure students were properly taught before Oxford, and the college was designed as a quadrangle, with hall, chapel, and library - the pattern for subsequent Oxford colleges.
