The formation of Balliol College is traditionally given as 1263, but three years earlier John I de Balliol rented a house in Oxford for students. Dervorguilla, his wife, is honoured as a co-founder by providing an endowment in 1282. The college has several times fallen into financial difficulties but has survived to become one of the principal colleges in Oxford. The present Chapel dates from 1857, replacing two earlier buildings and the Dining Hall from 1872, unusually containing a Henry Willis organ.
